For more than thirty years, the number 6 has appeared across Berlin. Painted on posters, boards, walls and found surfaces, it has become one of the city's most persistent visual signs. Many Berliners know the 6. Far fewer know the person behind it.
Artists and street artists come and go. The 6 has remained.
Its repetition is a gesture of insistence. The same elementary sign returns across decades of a city in constant transformation. Posters are replaced. Surfaces disappear. Neighbourhoods change. The 6 is made again.
And the 6 is only the point of entry. Sixes become sevens. Smiles appear alongside numbers, words and web addresses. Marks accumulate, transform and migrate from one surface to another. Under 4RTist.de#⥢, they extend into an idiosyncratic constellation of websites.
The 6 is the point of recognition. The aggregate is the work.
The film by Hannes Jahreis offers a rare proximity to the person behind the 6 and the wider practice it belongs to. Shot in black and white, it develops a force and precision of its own. The film intertwines with a life devoted to an underground culture and a body of work that has persisted for decades on its own terms.
INSISTENCE, the exhibition at Galerie Linger, brings the film together with a wall of painted bottles and a selection of altered advertising posters. For a brief moment, film, objects and inscriptions gather in one space, bringing into view a practice and its discourse usually dispersed across Berlin.
