J BALLARD: SELECTED WORKS

J Ballard collects strange facts, faces, scraps, rumours and objects, which return in the work altered. One suspects they had travelled through a medium.

Glow. Dust. Whisper. Drawings possess the peculiar authority of things that have appeared. Composition wouldn’t quite convey it. A figure enters. A world materialises. Something ridiculous becomes frightening; something abject becomes tender.

Through the labyrinths of Soho, night-Neukölln, forests, esoteric books, through East End dark stories, among animals, criminals, rubbish, rumours and the strange residue of bohemian life, JB retains access to an odd pictorial underground.

There’s a mission here. The work looks simultaneously ancient and instantaneous. Populated by unstable creatures, small constructions in which rubbish suddenly acquires occult importance, it is largely hidden, sending ripples and a rigour through the surface.

It is evidence of contact.
