"(...) it is worth noting", wrtites a Chilean art theorist Bárbara Igor Ovalle, "that it is Duarte’s trajectory that largely dictates the gesture. Precepts of reason or consciousness – what we might call a personal encyclopedia, in the sense proposed by Umberto Eco – are what modulate these Works on Paper. The street, the public space par excellence, has been the primary site of collection. This is also evident in his photographic work Desplazamiento (Displacement), the result of a two-year journey on foot through the streets of Santiago de Chile (2004). The superimposition of elements that the eye assembles into images feeds a constantly expanding personal encyclopedia. Walking, as a performative exercise, operates as a sign of a search that is not confined to the intellectual plane, but takes shape in reality through the very act of walking, moving, or wandering. And within this same act resides the body – the artist’s body, which makes the act possible and thus becomes a constitutive part of the work."
