LACAN ON SUBLIMATION

Reading group with Jessica Musler at Galerie Linger

Let us consider: what happens when desire becomes an ethical question? What place does art occupy in that inquiry?

Art enters this inquiry through sublimation, raising the question of how we can make something of a desire that no object can fully satisfy.

Galerie Linger welcomes a sustained reading of Jacques Lacan’s Seminar VII, The Ethics of Psychoanalysis (1959–1960). Led by Jessica Musler, the group will follow questions of desire, sublimation, sexuality and art, while tracing Lacan’s influence through the work of Joan Copjec, Alenka Zupančič and Slavoj Žižek.

At Linger, which is a bookshop as well as a gallery, reading takes place alongside works, exhibitions and publications. It belongs to our ongoing inquiry into what animates the image: how a work holds our attention, gives form to an absence, or unsettles what we expect from it. Seminar VII opens these concerns to collective discussion, with time to stay close to a text and let its difficulties become productive.

The programme develops across ten meetings, shaped by Jessica’s selection of readings and the questions participants bring.
