We are delighted to welcome Stefan Römer to Galerie Linger for a presentation of his ReCoder experimental film cycle.
Römer is an artist, filmmaker and theorist whose work has engaged with institutional critique and the afterlife of conceptual art for more than three decades. His notion of deconceptualization asks what happens when the conceptual itself becomes an artistic convention, proposing a deconstruction of artistic practice.
Beginning with ReCoder-Performance (2018), the cycle moves through a recoding of life and art, revisiting the parameters of the historical avant-garde, before arriving at ReCoding Everything (2026). Through collage, montage, language and sound, the films examine the changing conditions of image production, labour, memory and digital culture. Römer describes ReCoder as a science fiction of the present, asking what has become of the critical and political possibilities of montage.
