ATLAS EUROPE SQUARE
ATLAS EUROPE SQUARE
Description (EN)
A long-term artistic project that asks a deceptively simple question: where is Europe. Since 2003, Yves Mettler has been photographing and mapping “Europe Squares” across the continent – public spaces named after an idea that remains unstable, contested, and unevenly realised. The book gathers this material into a dispersed atlas, where each square appears as a fragment of a larger, imagined site, a “superspace” that connects cities while revealing their differences. Architecture, signage, layout, atmosphere – each location stages Europe in its own way, as promise, projection, or residue. What emerges is not a unified image but a field of discrepancies, where political imagination meets local reality. The atlas becomes a way of reading Europe through its margins, its repetitions, and its failed attempts at coherence.
