Painting as immersion, more than composition. Hubbard’s surfaces enter into nature's density. Flowers, foliage, undergrowth begin to move and to dissolve into the movement, releasing vibration, atmosphere.

The earlier charcoal works carry a strange gravity. Vases and floral forms emerge from darkness ceremonially, negotiating the right to appear. Later paintings open outward, into colour. The brushstroke loosens and expands, and the surface turns into a climate.
