A clear case of ruinology.

It’s Beate Gütschow, “Resistance, Flood, Fire, Resistance”, but it’s also Béla Tarr, in terms of climate. Landscapes – emptied yet charged, shaped by forces that have already passed through.

The book makes a fine use of negative space. The human figure is experienced as a punctuation, and it's terrain and process that take over the frame. Flood, fire, resistance. Yes: texture, erosion, and distance. A poetics of choice that reverses intention.

These images are not consoling. But they are quietly captivated by what hurts.
