The work belongs to a series Viola Schmitt began in 2023, initially looking at vegetables growing in her garden and their extraordinary colours. Gradually, observation gave way to images arriving through what she describes as her “inner eye”: forms seen before they are put onto paper.

The series marks a turn from earlier work concerned with disappearance, bones and the body towards colour and a more elusive kind of figuration.
