The work was built by hand without a preparatory drawing or model and fired unglazed in a wood kiln. Ash deposits and the movement of flame determine its coloration and parts of its surface. The firing thus continues a process initiated by the hand under conditions that cannot be fully anticipated.

The distinction between making and firing remains visible in the finished work without becoming a division between intention and accident.
