Schmitt allows the image convictions that contemporary painting often distrusts: symmetry, luminosity, inward vision, even beauty. She does not protect them with irony.
Her forms follow these convictions past their reassuring associations. Symmetry becomes division; softness risks exposure; the visionary becomes strangely physical. This is where Schmitt’s pictorial logic takes hold.
