VANISHING BERLIN – IN DER ZWISCHENZEIT / FOR THE TIME BEING
VANISHING BERLIN – IN DER ZWISCHENZEIT / FOR THE TIME BEING
A photographic study of Berlin in transition.
Since 2009, Alexander Steffen has been documenting the rapid transformation of the city. Storefronts, wastelands, backyards, brick walls. Places that define Berlin, yet disappear at an accelerated pace.
The images do not look back.
They register a present already slipping away.
What emerges is a layer of the city that is neither preserved nor yet replaced. A fragile zone shaped by urban development, rising rents, and the gradual loss of local structures.
The project addresses a broader condition. City centres being sold, neighbourhood cultures displaced, architecture becoming increasingly uniform. What remains is a diffuse sense of loss.
A quiet document of what is about to vanish.
