While many of his contemporaries explored conceptual strategies, Bernard remained committed to painting as a material and intellectual practice. His canvases are built, though, layering fabrics, cardboard, wood and found materials beneath pigment to create dense, tactile surfaces that he himself described as palimpsests.
Bernard manages to reconcile modernist concerns with surface, colour and autonomy with a deeply poetic sense of place.
